Abdominal CT
What Will the Exam Be Like?
The scanner will rotate around you to capture detailed cross-sectional images. You’ll need to remain still to ensure clear images, and you may be asked to hold your breath for a few seconds during certain parts of the scan. The technologist will position you using the scanner’s AI-based Auto Positioning feature for precise alignment, ensuring comfort and accuracy. The technologist will be in a nearby control room, able to see, hear, and communicate with you through an intercom system.
Some exams may require contrast material (oral or IV) to enhance image clarity. If contrast is needed, you may drink a solution or receive an injection. You might feel a warm sensation or a metallic taste in your mouth if IV contrast is used—these are normal and pass quickly. Specific instructions about contrast will be provided by your healthcare team.

How Do I Prepare for the Exam?
Detailed preparation instructions will be provided when you schedule your appointment.
General guidelines include:
- Fasting: You may need to avoid eating or drinking for a few hours before the scan, especially if contrast material is used. Specific fasting instructions will be provided.
- Clothing and Accessories: Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. You may need to change into a hospital gown. Remove all metal objects, such as jewelry, watches, glasses, hairpins, hearing aids, or dentures, as these can interfere with the images.
- Medications: Continue taking prescribed medications unless otherwise instructed. If you take metformin (Glucophage) for diabetes, inform your provider, as you may need to pause it temporarily.
- Medical History: Inform your doctor or technologist if you are pregnant, suspect you might be pregnant, or have a history of allergies, kidney problems, heart disease, asthma, diabetes, or thyroid issues. These may affect the use of contrast material.
- Contrast Preparation: If oral contrast is required, you may need to drink a solution starting 1–2 hours before the exam. If IV contrast is needed, a small needle will be inserted into a vein during the exam. Your provider will confirm if a recent kidney function test is required.
How Long Does the Exam Take?
After the scan, you can usually resume normal activities immediately unless otherwise instructed. If contrast was used, drink plenty of fluids to help flush it from your body. Results are typically available within 24–48 hours, and a radiologist will interpret the images and send a report to your doctor, who will discuss the findings with you.
