MUSCULOSKELETAL CT

A musculoskeletal CT scan uses advanced X-ray technology to create detailed images of your bones, joints, and surrounding tissues. Our facility uses the General Electric Revolution Maxima CT scanner, a state-of-the-art system designed to provide high-quality images with efficiency and patient comfort in mind. This information will help you understand what to expect during your exam.

What Will the Exam Be Like?

During the CT scan, you will lie on a comfortable table that slides into the Revolution Maxima CT scanner, which is a large, open, donut-shaped machine. The scanner will rotate around you to capture detailed images of the area being examined, such as your bones, joints, or muscles. The process is painless, and the scanner is quiet. You may hear slight buzzing or clicking sounds as the machine operates. Our technologist will monitor you from an adjacent room, and you can communicate with them through a speaker system if needed. To ensure clear images, you will need to remain still during the scan, and you may be asked to hold your breath briefly.

In some cases, a contrast dye may be used to enhance the images. This may be given orally or through an IV. If contrast is needed, you will receive specific instructions from your healthcare provider.

How Do I Prepare for the Exam?

Preparation for your musculoskeletal CT scan is minimal, but specific instructions will be provided by your healthcare provider based on your medical history and the area being scanned. General guidelines include:

  • Clothing and Accessories: You may be asked to wear a hospital gown and remove jewelry, glasses, or other metal objects, as these can interfere with the imaging.
  • Dietary Restrictions: You may need to avoid eating or drinking for a few hours before the exam, especially if contrast dye is used. Detailed instructions will be provided when you schedule your appointment.
  • Medications: Continue taking your prescribed medications unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.
  • Medical History: Inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, may be pregnant, have kidney issues, or have had allergic reactions to contrast dye in the past.

How Long Does the Exam Take?

The entire appointment, including preparation, typically takes 20 to 60 minutes, depending on the area being scanned and whether contrast is used. The actual scanning process usually lasts 5 to 15 minutes. The Revolution Maxima’s advanced technology helps streamline the process, ensuring efficiency and comfort. After the scan, you can usually resume normal activities unless otherwise instructed. If contrast dye was used, you may be advised to drink extra fluids to help flush it from your system.

Your results will be reviewed by a radiologist and sent to your doctor, typically within 24 to 48 hours. Your doctor will discuss the findings with you and any next steps.
